Trip 2. Valdivian rainforests and ancient southern conifers: a biogeographical island reflecting warmer past. A boat ride through the majestic Nahuel Huapi lake and hike into tall rainforests dominated by Nothofagus dombeyi and Fitzroya cuppressoides and Pilgerodendron uviferum sphagnum bogs. Trip 3. The Nothofagus forest to steppe gradient: one of the steepest biome transitions on earth. Trip 7. Isla Victoria. A sort of natural experiment on plant and animal introductions: success and failure of invasions. Trip 8. Araucaria ecosystems: a time-travel to the Cretaceous. A bus travel through the Confluencia-Siete Lagos area into the Rucachoroi- Lago Aluminé Araucaria forest area. On the way north we will be crossing the east west transition with several stops in different forests and scenic locations overlooking woodland, forest and lake landscapes. Several Araucaria forest and woodland locations will be visited to better understand the natural history, biogeography, ecology and conservation of this unique ecosystem. Field leader: Thomas Kitzberger and Javier Sanguinetti. 3-day trip. Feb 19-21, 2010.
